This material is critical for an equitable energy transition, but the smelting process is: a huge energy consumer, heavily reliant on a 24/7 stable supply, and navigating an energy grid load that is rapidly shifting to intermittent sources. This is putting the entire operational process under significant pressure, as aluminium needs to stay molten to be processed.
